Paramedics

What they do

A paramedic in primary care is a highly skilled healthcare professional who works alongside the GP team to assess, diagnose, and treat patients with a range of health conditions. While many people associate paramedics with emergencies and ambulances, in a GP practice they use their extensive clinical skills to help manage both routine and urgent health concerns.

Paramedics in this role can conduct patient consultations, both in the surgery and during home visits, for those with minor illnesses, long-term conditions, or urgent problems that need a same-day assessment. They are trained to carry out physical examinations, interpret test results, and provide advice on self-management. This means you might see a paramedic for anything from a cough or minor injury to more serious conditions like asthma or heart problems.

Key aims

  • Improve access to care by managing a variety of appointments and conducting home visits, which frees up GP time to focus on patients with more complex medical needs.
  • Provide urgent, same-day care by assessing and managing unexpected health issues, offering telephone advice and face-to-face appointments.
  • Support patients at home by visiting housebound individuals or those at risk of hospital admission to provide treatment and support, which can often prevent the need for further care.
  • Manage long-term conditions by performing specialist health checks and reviews for patients with ongoing health issues.
  • Promote self-management by advising patients on general healthcare and empowering them with the knowledge to manage their own well-being.

How to connect with them

If you need medical advice or treatment, you should contact the surgery in the usual way. The reception team will help direct you to the most appropriate healthcare professional to meet your needs, which may be a paramedic. They may arrange a telephone call to assess your situation, or if you are unable to come to the surgery, they may schedule a home visit.
